Top 10 Billboard Rock Songs - January 7, 2012

By , About.com Guide

When the calendar turned from 2010 to 2011, the Black Keys were the kings of the Billboard Rock Songs chart thanks to their breakthrough single "Tighten Up." On this week's countdown, we say hello to 2012 and, once again, the Black Keys are at No. 1. But what else is in the Top 10? Let's take a look...

10. Young the Giant - "Cough Syrup"

Three weeks ago, Young the Giant broke into the Top 10 with "Cough Syrup," landing at No. 10. Immediately thereafter they fell off the chart. Well, they're back for another go-round, once again setting up camp at No. 10. Welcome back, fellas.

9. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie"

"The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" has been in the Top 10 for five months now, but that could be coming to a close. The former No. 1 hit from Red Hot Chili Peppers drops another notch to No. 9. The song had been No. 1 for an impressive eight straight weeks.

8. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Monarchy of Roses"

As one Chili Peppers track falls down the chart, another zooms in to take its place. "Monarchy of Roses," the second single from I'm With You, rises one place to No. 8. The band will hit the road in January for a U.S. tour.

7. Seether - "Tonight"

Seether's "Tonight" made my list of 2011's best rock songs, but the track's commercial potency has long since faded. "Tonight" got as high as No. 4, but it's now at No. 7 for a second straight week.

6. Foo Fighters - "Walk"

While Foo Fighters wait to see how they do at this year's Grammys, their first of two songs on our countdown, "Walk," drops one spot to No. 6. Still, the song enjoyed life at the top of our chart for eight weeks.

5. Foo Fighters - "These Days"

The band's other single from Wasting Light, "These Days," trades places with "Walk," moving from No. 6 to No. 5. After a 2011 in which Foo Fighters dominated the weekly Rock Songs chart, it's sure weird lately to see no Foo songs among the top two or three on the countdown.

4. Chevelle - "Face to the Floor"

"Face to the Floor" had been zooming up the chart, but this week Chevelle hit a roadblock, dropping one spot to No. 4. All of a sudden, the possibility of hitting No. 1 seems a lot less certain. The song is the first single off Hats Off to the Bull, which only got as high as No. 20 on the Billboard album chart.

3. Coldplay - "Paradise"

Coldplay's "Paradise" had been languishing at No. 4 for four straight weeks, but this week the song returns to the No. 3 spot, its previous peak. The band will be starting up their North American tour to support Mylo Xyloto in April.

2. Bush - "The Sound of Winter"

For a third straight week, "The Sound of Winter" sits at No. 2. The former No. 1 hit from Bush is the lead single off The Sea of Memories, which earned the distinction of being one of 2011's worst albums.

1. The Black Keys - "Lonely Boy"

"Lonely Boy" can't be stopped. For a third week in a row, the Black Keys track rules the Rock Songs countdown. And considering that it's the only song in the top four spots that recorded significant airplay and sales gains this week, there's a good chance it may be settling in for a good long run at the top.
