Starting with this week's Billboard Rock Charts column, we're going to be adding a new countdown: the Rock Airplay chart. It brings together rock and alternative tracks under one roof in a way that a lot of our other charts don't. But the big story is that a long-running Boston band are still going strong almost 40 years after their debut...

Rock Songs Chart

1. fun. - "Some Nights" (Purchase/Download)
2. Alex Clare - "Too Close" (Purchase/Download)
3. The Lumineers - "Ho Hey" (Purchase/Download)
4. Phillip Phillips - "Home" (Purchase/Download)
5. Imagine Dragons - "It's Time" (Purchase/Download)

The New York trio fun. enjoy their sixth week in a row at the top of the Rock Songs chart with "Some Nights." The single has been certified platinum, a fine follow-up to their hit "We Are Young," which has gone quintuple-platinum. Elsewhere, the Top Five is rather stagnant, with only the Lumineers and Phillip Phillips changing spots.

Rock Airplay Chart

1. Mumford & Sons - "I Will Wait" (Purchase/Download)
2. Muse - "Madness" (Purchase/Download)
3. The Lumineers - "Ho Hey" (Purchase/Download)
4. The Black Keys - "Little Black Submarines" (Purchase/Download)
5. Three Days Grace - "Chalk Outline" (Purchase/Download)

The Rock Airplay chart focuses on "radio airplay audience impressions," which is basically a fancy way of saying songs that are actually played on the radio. "I Will Wait" from Mumford & Sons beats out Muse's "Madness" for the top spot. Also worth noting is the continued strong showing from Three Days Grace at No. 5 with "Chalk Outline": They're the only hard rock band making much of an impact on the singles charts.

Rock Albums Chart

1. Aerosmith - Music From Another Dimension! (Purchase/Download)
2. Mumford & Sons - Babel (Purchase/Download)
3. Third Day - Miracle (Purchase/Download)
4. All That Remains - A War You Cannot Win (Purchase/Download)
5. Punk Goes Pop: Volume 5 (Purchase/Download)

After six weeks at the top of the Rock Albums chart, Babel is forced to concede defeat to Music From Another Dimension!, the latest disc from veteran rockers Aerosmith. As usual, the rest of the Top Five is a diverse collection of different genres, everything from the Christian rock of Third Day to the metal of All That Remains. And then there's Punk Goes Pop: Volume 5, the latest compilation of punk bands doing covers of pop hits.

Alternative Songs Chart

1. Muse - "Madness" (Purchase/Download)
2. Mumford & Sons - "I Will Wait" (Purchase/Download)
3. The Black Keys - "Little Black Submarines" (Purchase/Download)
4. The Lumineers - "Ho Hey" (Purchase/Download)
5. Passion Pit - "Take a Walk" (Purchase/Download)

The Alternative Songs chart shows no movement, with the Top Five exactly the same as they were a week ago. That means that "Madness" (off Muse's The 2nd Law) reigns supreme for a fifth straight week.

Alternative Albums Chart

1. Mumford & Sons - Babel (Purchase/Download)
2. Punk Goes Pop: Volume 5 (Purchase/Download)
3. fun. - Some Nights (Purchase/Download)
4. The Lumineers - The Lumineers (Purchase/Download)
5. Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More (Purchase/Download)

With Punk Goes Pop: Volume 5 the only new entry in the Top Five of the Alternative Albums chart, Babel maintains its stranglehold at No. 1. And for the fourth week in a row, both of Mumford & Sons' albums are in the Top Five.

Hard Rock Albums Chart

1. Aerosmith - Music From Another Dimension! (Purchase/Download)
2. All That Remains - A War You Cannot Win (Purchase/Download)
3. Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night) (Purchase/Download)
4. Flyleaf - New Horizons (Purchase/Download)
5. Stone Sour - House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 (Purchase/Download)

Aerosmith are also the kings of the Hard Rock Albums chart, beating out another Massachusetts-based band, All That Remains, for No. 1. Elsewhere, last week's No. 1, Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night), falls to No. 3, and Flyleaf's New Horizons drops two places to No. 4. And I'm happy to see that House of Gold & Bones - Part 1, the superb new record from Stone Sour, is holding its ground in the Top Five, down just one place to No. 5.
