'Sound City' Documentary Will Get a (Short) Theatrical Release

Dave Grohl's passion project, a documentary about the legendary recording space Sound City Studios, will be available online February 1 though the film's website. The day before, though, fans can see it on the big screen in select cities around North America.

Spin has the complete screening schedule for Sound City, and while most of the showings will be January 31, a few will take place throughout February. The important thing to keep in mind is that, with a few exceptions, each city will only be showing it once. This has become a bit of a tradition with music documentaries: The filmmakers screen them once in theaters for the hardcore fans, and then you have to buy it on DVD or online if you want to see it afterward.

In the meantime, the Foo Fighters frontman will be taking his film to Sundance, where it will have its world premiere. That will be happening Friday, January 18, so expect some reviews to start trickling out soon after.
