Black Keys, Jack White Up for Album of the Year Grammy

By December 6, 2012

Every year when the Grammy nominations are announced, it's hard to get too excited if you're a rock fan. Yes, rock does have its own specialty categories, but the big prizes tend to be dominated by pop and hip-hop acts. That wasn't so much the case this year, however, as last night several rock (and rock-like acts) heard their names mentioned in the prestige categories.

The Black Keys and Jack White are both in the running for Album of the Year, a first for the Ohio blues-rock duo and the first time White has been honored as a solo artist. (The White Stripes were nominated for Elephant.) The Black Keys' El Camino and White's Blunderbuss will be squaring off against fun.'s Some Nights, Mumford & Sons' Babel, and Frank Ocean's Channel Orange. Depending on how liberal you want to be in your definition of "rock," that means that four of the five Best Albumnominees are at least somewhat rock-ish.

But the accolades didn't end there for the Black Keys. They're also up for Record of the Year for "Lonely Boy," another first for them. Frontman Dan Auerbach also snagged a Producer of the Year, Non-Classical nomination for his work on El Camino and other records.

Focusing on the specific rock categories, they are, as always, a mixture of rock, alternative, metal and pop. The more the merrier, I say: It's always sorta fun when a brand new band like Alabama Shakes find themselves in competition with someone like Bruce Springsteen, who's won 20 Grammys.

The Grammys will be telecast on February 10, 2013.
