There are several important milestones in the history of rap-rock, and one of them most certainly is the release of Rage Against the Machine, the debut album from Rage Against the Machine. Combining militant themes, metal riffs, and hip-hop rhymes, Rage Against the Machine made Zack de la Rocha's angry vocals and Tom Morello's screeching guitars signature sounds of the 1990s. The album, which featured classic tracks like "Killing in the Name," came out in November of 1992. Twenty years later, it's coming back to stores.
Sony announced that they'll be releasing Rage Against the Machine -- XX on November 27, and it'll be available in several different formats, including a box set that includes (among other things) a 40-page commemorative booklet. And in a sign of how influential the album was not just for rock but also rap, Public Enemy leader Chuck D has written new liner notes for this reissue.
This announcement comes at a time when Rage Against the Machine are known more for performing the occasional concert than for writing new music. (Although there are sometimes suggestions that the group will get back together, these rumors tend to get squashed pretty quickly.) For the record, the last time RATM put out an album of new songs was 1999. This band will always be remembered for their rap-rock legacy, but it would be nice if they occasionally decided to build on that legacy with some new material.
