Coldplay Win Best Rock Video for "Paradise"

For the second time, Coldplay found themselves nominated for Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. But unlike 2009, when "Viva La Vida" lost out to Green Day's "21 Guns," tonight they were the winners. On Thursday, the U.K. quartet snagged the Moonman for their "Paradise" clip. The song, the biggest hit off of last year's Mylo Xyloto, depicted frontman Chris Martin dressed as a elephant looking to go home. It wasn't the most visually dazzling nominee or the quirkiest entry, but it was easily the most charming, which may have helped.

Taking the trophy, the band beat out, among others, the Black Keys' "Lonely Boy" and Linkin Park's "Burn It Down." If Linkin Park had won, it would have been their fourth Best Rock Video prize in 10 years, which would have tied Aerosmith for the most victories in this category. But instead of handing it over to a familiar winner, tonight the victors were the new guys. Well, the relative new guys: Coldplay have previously won four Moonmen in other categories.
