Wilco and Billy Bragg Have More Woody Guthrie Songs on the Way

Wilco and Billy Bragg teamed up at the end of the 1990s to produce two quality folk-rock albums built around Woody Guthrie lyrics that he'd never turned into songs. Those records, Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, boosted awareness of Guthrie's legacy in indie-rock circles and brought Wilco and Bragg much acclaim. Vol. II came out in 2000, but now Bragg is revealing that there's more material from those sessions that will be hitting our ears soon.

On Bragg's website, he said that Nonesuch (Wilco's former label) will be putting out Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions. This will consist of four discs, which will include the first two Mermaid Avenue albums as well as another disc of 17 other tracks from the session. Additionally, the documentary Man in the Sand (which chronicles the making of Mermaid Avenue) will be featured in the package.

Helpfully, Consequence of Sound discovered that Amazon is saying Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions will be arriving March 27. It's hard to believe it's been 14 years since the very first Mermaid Avenue. But, then again, maybe it won't be when we hear this unearthed material and compare it to Wilco's recent The Whole Love. They've definitely tinkered with their sound in the last decade or so.
