When R.E.M. revealed on Wednesday that they were breaking up, one of the reasons they cited was work the band had been doing on a greatest-hits package. "During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'?," bassist Mike Mills wrote. "Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together." Now we have some details about that greatest-hits collection, which will be called Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011.

As the title suggests, this best-of will cover the band's entire career, including some songs the band had been working on since releasing Collapse Into Now. R.E.M. have put out several greatest-hits collections in the past, but Part Lies, Part Heart will be the first that brings together the band's indie '80s on I.R.S. with the group's major-label work on Warner Bros.

Details about what songs will or won't make the cut haven't been revealed yet, but with R.E.M. one of the challenges will be balancing the obvious hits with fan favorite that never made a dent on the charts. That's one of the interesting things about this group: It's almost like they're two bands, the popular one and the underground one. Hopefully both will find their way onto Part Lies, Part Heart.
