Black Keys Return to BlakRoc Side Project

By September 6, 2011

When you hear the term rap-rock, you probably think of rock bands whose frontman spits rhymes on top of guitars and drums. But the BlakRoc project was a little different, bringing together the Ohio blues-rock duo the Black Keys and a whole mess of esteemed MCs, including Mos Def, RZA, Ludacris and Ol' Dirty Bastard. The project yielded one album, BlakRoc, in 2009, and now it appears a second edition is on its way.

The side project released a trailer right before Labor Day weekend to give fans a taste of what to expect, although no release date is mentioned. However, we know that Talib Kweli and Curren$y (among other rappers) will be part of the project, which is tentatively being titled BlakRoc 2.

This isn't the only Black Keys music coming our way soon. The band will be releasing their follow-up to Brothers presumably by the end of the year. No idea yet which record to expect first, but either way the duo's rising profile (thanks to the success of Brothers) will give these albums a heightened visibility. When BlakRoc dropped, it was something of an under-the-radar project. That won't happen with the sequel.
