Nevermind, one of the seminal albums of the modern rock era, will be getting some extra special attention on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. Universal has announced plans to release a deluxe edition of the Nirvana record on September 19, which will include four CDs and one DVD.
The deluxe edition is said to feature rarities and B-sides, which is strange because it's widely believed that there isn't much unheard Nirvana music sitting in the vaults. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic said as much back in 2009 when he acknowledged, "There's a lot of video. There's not going to be any new Nirvana records." So with the group's comprehensive 2004 overview With the Lights Out collecting the Seattle trio's odds-and-ends, you'd have to wonder what these other songs will consist of. (As for the DVD, this is said to contain a previously unreleased concert from the era.)
Though Nevermind remains the band's most acclaimed and popular album, it's not the first to get the fancy anniversary re-release treatment. The album that came out before Nevermind, Nirvana's 1989 debut Bleach, also was reissued in a deluxe edition for its 20th anniversary. I think it's inevitable that we'll see the same thing in 2013 for In Utero.
