Green Day have been busy over the last two years developing an American Idiot musical, which debuted in Berkeley and eventually made its way to Broadway, winning two Tonys in the process. With the show's New York run over, it appears that the punk trio are now focusing on new music for the first time since 2009's 21st Century Breakdown.
Without going into specifics, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took to Twitter late last night to reveal that the group have "a ton of new songs," adding "The direction is fresh and [high] energy. Feels great." In a separate tweet, he wrote, "I don't want to give away too much but just know that me mike tre and Jason are collaborating and having the best time playing music." Mike is bassist Mike Dirnt, and Tre is drummer Tre Cool; as for the Jason, it's either Jason White (the group's touring guitarist) or Jason Freese (who plays keyboards and horns on tour).
Clearly Armstrong wants to get the faithful excited about a new album, but thus far Green Day haven't revealed any timetable for when to expect that record. But considering the four-year gap between Warning and American Idiot and the five-year gap between American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, it would seem that at least we won't have to wait quite so long this time around to get our hands on a new disc.
