Green Day's 'American Idiot' Musical Is Broadway Bound

The well-reviewed American Idiot musical will be ending its run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California, on Sunday, November 15. But it appears that won't be the last we hear of this show -- it has its sights set on Broadway.

The theater publication Playbill noted that there's now a casting notice for a Broadway run, although no information is given about when the show will run or which theatre will house the production. Looking for more specifics, Playbill contacted American Idiot spokesman Michael Hartman, who only said, "There is a Broadway future for the show, but at this time no dates or theatre are confirmed."

The American Idiot musical draws from songs off Green Day's quintuple-platinum American Idiot but also includes material from this year's 21st Century Breakdown. If this Broadway run comes to fruition, it would be the first time a rock album has reached the Great White Way since the Who's Tommy landed in New York in 1993. Interestingly, when Green Day released American Idiot in 2004, reviewers noted its similarities to the Who's concept-album ambitions of the 1970s. Turns out that those comparisons were more apt than any of us realized at the time.
