Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy is starting to develop a reputation for taking the reins of famous bands desperately in need of a new singer. When Creed’s musicians split with Scott Stapp and decided to form Alter Bridge, Kennedy was brought on as vocalist. But now Alter Bridge may be taking a backburner to Kennedy’s next gig: lead singer for the Led Zeppelin reunion tour.
With Led Zep frontman Robert Plant insisting he’s not interested in joining guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham (son of deceased original drummer John) for a formal comeback tour, the band have been looking around for a replacement singer. Billboard is reporting that sources have suggested the job could be Kennedy’s, although there’s been no official announcement as of yet.
If Creed fans thought nobody could fill Stapp’s shoes, I can’t even imagine how Led Zeppelin’s fans are going to feel about Kennedy’s promotion to Plant duties. In Alter Bridge, Kennedy’s saving grace was that he didn’t belt the songs like Stapp did, but that sort of restraint is a far cry from the intensity and range needed for Led Zep classics like “Kashmir” or “Stairway to Heaven.”
Well, if these rumors are true, good luck to Kennedy. Some rock fans welcomed his replacing of Stapp – he definitely won’t get a free pass if he tries to take over Plant’s place at the microphone.
